Ankit Zaveri becomes the first ever vitim of ‘Mankading’ in GDCL, courtesy Saurabh Jhaveri; CCI XI beat Osian Cricket Club by 4 runs

Before the cricketing world was divided on Ravichandran Ashwin’s infamous ‘Mankading’ of Jos Buttler on Monday, CCI XI’s right arm medium pacer Saurabh Jhaveri indulged in ‘Mankading’ on Sunday when he ran out Osian Cricket Club’s Ankit Zaveri.

The two sides locked horns against each other on Sunday at CCI, Mumbai, during the GDCL. Batting first, CCI XI was restricted to a paltry 130-7 in 20 overs, thanks to Nirav Bheda’s stellar performance with the ball. Opening the bowling for Osian Cricket Club, Bheda scalped 3-19 in his four overs. The opening pair of Raj Khandwala and Tejas Patani was dismissed for duck in the very first over of the match. Rupen Jhaveri (28 off 33) and Salil Purohit (44 off 37) consolidated the innings and helped their side put up a decent total of 130 on board. Rohit Shukla and Harsh Dhadda were the other bowlers who picked up solitary wicket each.

Chasing a modest score of 131 was supposed to be an easy one however Osian Cricket Club made a mess and were dwindled down for 126-9 in 20 overs, falling short of just four runs. The openers Vishal Shah (28 of 22) and Kamran Ahmed (28 off 20) got off to a solid start and were supported well by Siddharth Kadam (23 off 24) and Nirav Bheda (20 off 23), but the unexpected collapse, led to the team’s downfall. Zaosh Irani of CCI XI was the wrecker-in-chief as he wrecked havoc with his 3-24 in four overs. Irani was spectacular with his line and length and reaped sweet fruits for his hard work in the low scoring match. Apart from Irani’s splendid bowling display, this match will be remembered for the ‘Mankading’ done by CCI XI’s Saurabh Jhaveri to run out Ankit Zaveri that left a sour taste. “The equation was tight. Osian required nine in the final over. They lost a wicket on the first ball, and had to get nine off five. When I was bowling, I saw Ankit Zaveri taking a few steps start before the delivery was bowled. I applied my presence of mind, and ran him out by ‘Mankading’. I have done ‘Mankading’ a couple of times before. This is the first time in the history of GDCL that a batsman has been out by ‘Mankading’”, elucidated Saurabh Jhaveri.

Further, Ankit Zaveri, the unlucky victim of ‘Mankading’ averred, “As per the rules of the game, ‘Mankading’ is fine, but we did not expect this from a team like CCI. The gentleman’s sport has certain ungentle things, perhaps ‘Mankading’ is one of them. I agree it was my mistake but did not anticipate to get out in that fashion. But in the end it is fine”.

Zaosh Irani was bestowed with the Man of the Match for his match winning bowling performance.
