Prize Distribution Ceremony commences for Khar Gymkhana and Govardhandas Shield Tournament

The prize distribution for the Seth Gordhandas Cricket Tournament 2017 was held at Khar Gymkhana on August 3, 2017. This tournament has completed 76 years and it was originally started to provide an opportunity to cricketers in the suburbs to play competitive cricket. It was started in 1940 even before the Kanga League. The chief guest for the prize distribution function was Rohan Gavaskar. The other distinguished guests were Amol Mazumdar, a legend in his own right, Ghulam Parkar a former India test cricketer, Mr Unmesh Khanvilkar, Joint secretary of MCA were also present.

This Tournament has always been a breeding ground for budding cricketers to not only showcase their skills but to also improve their game overall. A talented pool of players and teams participated in this year’s tournament and there were also some terrific individual performances. The matches were played on April while its prize distribution was held recently.

  • Team Yogi Cricket Club who had won the finals of the tournament eventually lifted the cup and won the series. The team was awarded a seth govardhandas rotating shield & replica along with a cash prize of Rs 15,000/- along with 15 shirts in the memory of Appa Babrekar.

  • The runner-up team which was Kandivali Cricket Association was also awarded a seth govardhandas rotating shield along with a replica, cash prize of Rs 10,000/- + 15 shirts in memory of Appa Babrekar.
  • Aggressive batsman Akshay Powale who impressed one and all in the tournament with his attacking batting was declared ‘the best batsman’ of the tournament’ after notching up 176 runs which also included an aggressive century. Akshay who is currently in London playing professional county cricket was awarded C.A Navalkar Trophy replica by Rohan Gavaskar along with a cash prize of Rs 10,000/-
  • Talented all-rounder Akash Bharadwaj (Kandivali Cricket Assn.) who took 11wkts in 4matches while conceding only 61runs was awarded ‘the best bowler of the tournament’. Akash was presented with a C.A Navalkar trophy, replica and a cash prize of Rs 3000/-

Similarly, prizes were awarded for Khar Gymkhana Cricket Tournament too where in SVIS team were the tournament winners while Rizvi Springfield Bandra were the runners up. Rahul Kesari with 259 runs & 2centuries from SVIS was the best batsman of the tournament while Yashaswi Jaiswal with 12wkts for just 147 runs was declared the ‘best bowler of the tournament’. SVIS(Borivali’s) Suved Parkar with 221runs and 10wkts was declared the ‘best all-rounder of the tournament’ Cricketgraph congratulates all the players who were awarded while also wishes all the teams and their participating players a great cricketing year ahead.
