Late Arjun Madhvi Women’s T20 Trophy: An Initiative for Women Cricketers
Late Arjun Madhvi Women’s Trophy is a tournament for women cricketers recognized by Mumbai Cricket Association. The tournament is organized by Rajesh Madhvi Sports Association & Daiwendya Cricket Club at Central Maidan, Thane.
Dr. Rajesh Madhvi who is the Chairman of Sporting Committee, Thane came across this noble idea of providing a platform to the deserving and hard working women cricketers of Mumbai. The tournament aims to uprise women cricketers and further motivate them to make a career in cricket. It was on the basis of that idea, Dr. Rajesh Madhvi Sports Association was started and the first women’s tournament was conducted in February 2021 with 8 teams all over from Mumbai, Palghar, Suburban Area, Kalyan Area & Bhiwandi. The 1st leg of tournament was successfully conducted and MCA appreciated the noble initiative for conducting this tournament. MCA –Mumbai Cricket Association later gave its recognition to this women’s tournament as an MCA Approved Tournament.
Dr. Rajesh Madhvi shared with Cricketgraph: “Our aim is to provide opportunities to women cricketers. There are not many tournaments happening in Mumbai for Women Cricketers as much as it’s happening for men cricketers. We want girls from our Mumbai, Thane and Suburban area to be encouraged and take up this profession and go on to represent India. It’s a great feeling that MCA has recognized this T20 tournament and we will continue to grow higher and higher with support from all of you”
The primary aim of behind this is to have atleast one player from Thane, Suburban area representing the Mumbai and India’s International Team. With this aim and vision, they have progressed ahead and this time they have organized women’s tournament which began from 13th December where in 16 teams across Mumbai and Suburban areas have participated in the tournament. The tournament will end on 28th December with 2 matches scheduled daily amongst 4 groups.
The tournament inauguration was conducted in presence of Indian Cricketer Poonam Raut, Honorable Opp Leader Maharashtra State MLA Pravin Darekar alongwith Ex Sports Minister Ashish Shelar, MCA President Vijay Patil, MLA Niranjan Dawkhare, MCA Secretary Sanjay Naik, Joint Secretary Shah Alam and Former Indian Test Cricketer Pravin Amre. The event was further graced by MCA Apex Committee Members Vihang Sarnaik, Nadeem Memom, Dipak Patil alongwith Women Selectors Vrinda Bhagat, Leya Francis, Trupti Bhattacharya, Nirmala Shah, Shital Sakas, and Shraddha Chavan. RTO Thane Vijay Shelke, Corporators Manohar Dumre, Sanjay Waghela, Mrunal Pendse and Pratibha Madhvi were also present at the tournament inaugration’s opening ceremony.
